Quick Facts about the Artist
Luo Ping 羅聘 (1733–1799), Qing dynasty painter lived in Yangzhou 揚州, Jiangsu Province.
Caught the attention of influential Yangzhou merchant-patrons Ma Yueguan 馬曰琯 (1688–1755) and Ma Yuelu 馬曰璐 (1697–after 1766), art collectors and bibliophiles who reportedly gave him access to the local literary world.
In 1752, at 19 years he married the poet and painter Fang Wanyi 方婉儀 (1732–1779); their daughter and two sons (Yunshao 允紹, and Yunzuan 允纘) also were artists specializing in painting plum blossoms—thus were called Luo family Plum School.
By 1757, Luo Ping commenced a multi-faceted relationship with Jin Nong金農 (1687–1763).
Luo and Jin were self-professed lay Buddhists, embracing religious practice in their daily lives and Buddhist subject matter in their paintings.
When, after six years of this close collaboration, Jin Nong died, Luo buried his teacher with as much reverence as if it were the funeral of his own father.
In the second half of his life, Luo often visited the capital, Beijing, causing a sensation in the fashionable cultural scene.
